Caring for Your Splinters Board
Your board has been handcrafted from high-quality hardwoods and finished with a blend of natural beeswax and food-safe mineral oil. With proper care, it will last for years — even decades.
Cleaning
Hand wash only with warm water and mild soap. Excess water makes wood swell which will damage your board.
Never soak or put in the dishwasher (excess water can cause warping or cracking).
Wipe dry immediately and thoroughly after washing. Stand and store upright whenever possible. For tough stains rub in lemon juice or white vinegar and rinse before using the mild soap and water. It is recommended to have separate boards for meats and fruits/vegetables.
Conditioning
Reapply board butter (a blend of beeswax + mineral oil) once a week for a month to acclimate your board. Then every 3–4 weeks or whenever the wood looks dry. Rub a small amount into the surface of your clean board with a soft cloth or paper towel. Let it sit overnight, then buff off the excess. If your board becomes rough over time you can lightly sand with 250-350 grit sanding block to bring back its smooth feel. Once sanded be sure to wipe clean and repeat the steps for conditioning your board. The need to do this will depend on the amount of use your board gets.
Usage Tips
Use both sides of your board to prevent uneven wear.
Avoid prolonged contact with acidic foods (like lemons or tomatoes) without wiping clean soon after.
Store in a dry place, standing upright if possible to promote airflow.
Pro Tip: Each board comes with a complimentary 2 oz. container of board butter. Extra 2 oz. and 4 oz. tins are always available in the shop for easy reconditioning.
